The late Ted Donovan
With the death of Ted Donovan Straffan had lost one of its foremost citizens.
Ted lived in Boreen before moving to the village. Devoted to his family and community, Ted was always busy. He gave freely of himself in local matters, particularly the Residents Associations, the Tidy Towns and above all the GAA. Ted was prominent as a player, match official, gateman, caretaker and lotto promoter. For a number of years he was Vice President of Straffan Club and involved himself in all its affairs.
Ted was ever present. He was there when Straffan won their first championship in 1946-47 and a team ember when the 1959 championship was won. As a player, official or supporter he rarely missed a match. When club grounds were acquired in 1968 Ted was there. When dressing rooms were provided in 1979 he was to the fore. Disappointments he took in his stride. Patience and loyalty were his finest virtues.
Ted's was a life commitment to the GAA. He regarded the club as the opportunity to work for the good of his community. We are all the poorer for his passing.
November 2006, Nicky Brennan, Uachtaran Cumann Luthchleas Gael, saw fit to honour Ted's dedication by the presentation of a Certificate of Service. Ted never sought reward or honour for what he regarded as an obligation. Nevertheless, he admitted to it being a proud moment.
Ted is survived by his wife Josie, sons Eddie, Patrick, Richard and Thomas, daughters Maud, Ann and Siobhan, brother Tom and sisters Peggie and Mossie.
