The Late Jim Grehan
The peaceful death of Jim Grehan, Anna Villa, Blessington Road, Naas on Saturday 14th June 2003 in Naas Hospital, was the end of a generation of Grehans from the town of Naas.
Jim was the last remaining member of his family, town brothers, the late Jack and Ger Grehan, four sisters, the late Lal Hogan, Helen Finnegan, Fred Rafferty, all from Naas, and Peggy Kerr from Clones.
Jim was educated in Naas CBS and after a brief spell in the Cotton Mills and the RAF, he returned to Naas to join his brothers Ger in the running of the long established family furniture business. This premises, formerly at 39 South Main Street, opposite the Court House, where Jim was born, was founded by his grandfather, John Grehan back in 1876. He retired from the business in 1977 and ended his working career as a rent collector with Kildare County Council.
Jim had a keen interest in all sporting activities and was an active participant in several including Gaelic football, rugby, hockey, table tennis, badminton, tennis and golf.
Jim was distinguished minor and senior footballer for Kildare and had the honour of representing his county in the 1943 Leinster Minor final.
In his latter years, his main sporting interest was golf. He was a member of the Naas Golf Club for over 50 years and was well known and respected throughout the golfing circles.
He was captain of the Club in 1960 and is a past treasurer, committee member and was an honourary member and trustee of the Club up to the time of his death. He was also a trustee of the Naas Moat Club.
The funeral mass was celebrated on Tuesday 17th June in St David's Church, Naas by Rev. Moling Lennon P.P. Naas and concelebrated by Fr Larry Newman P.P. Mounthrath and Rev. Jack Walsh P.P. Emo.
Jim is survived by his wife Eileen, his sons Ger and Brendan, grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
