Hendy, Tom

An appreciation:
Tom Hendy
Ballyteague GFC were saddened by the passing of the club's esteemed President Tom Hendy.
Tom was held in very high regard by all who knew him over his ninety two years - a kind gentleman and very generous to the club like his cousin the late Frank Thornton.
The club enjoyed the free use of the field since its foundation for games and events for a long number of years until it was purchased in the late seventies and he was proud to witness the developments and facilities of the club Pairc O Thaidhg on his former lands.
He helped to reform the club in 1951 when it was re-established after an absence of a number of years and was elected as Club President - a position he held continuously until his death. He maintained a keen interest in the club throughout the years in spite of his other interests including horse breeding and racing success under the banner of his town land, Grangeclare.
He was a prominent figure with the staging of the well known "Roberstown Grand Canal Festa" in the 60's and 70's. He was a noted historian who maintained an extensive collection of artefeacts of time past from the local area housed in Ballyteague Castle.
His wife Nita who was also a good and helpful friend to the club through her musical activities predeceased him in 2005.
The guard of honour by members of the club at his funeral at the church in Kilmeague was a fitting tribute to the high esteem he was held in by all who knew him.
The Ballyteague Club wish to extend sincerest sympathy to his family and to his large circle of friends.
