Summer
Blues
The summer camps are currently in full swing, but unfortunately for the
many kids taking part in the week long courses all over the country, the
weather has put a damper on the festivities. Some have been fortunate
to get through the week with relatively good weather but for many it has
been a complete wash out.
There is obvious disappointment among some of the younger folk, but the
fact that there have been some many excellent games to follow on the television
should have lifted spirits slightly. As we enter the business
end of both the All-Ireland hurling and football championships, there
are no hiding places for any of the teams left.
The qualifiers in both codes provided excellent matches with the Cork
v. Tipperary clash and Meaths win over Galway being the pick of
the bunch in hurling and football respectively. So even though it has
been hard to get out and play, make sure to get along to Croke Park for
the remaining matches and if not, catch them all on television.

Blast from the Past
Blast from the past
The three-game marathon between Tipperary and Limerick in this years
Munster SHC got a lot of people talking about epic battles between
two counties. The one that sticks out in most peoples minds
is the Leinster SFC first round clash between fierce rivals Meath
and Dublin in 1991.
The Royals had got the better of their neighbours in four of the
previous five provincial deciders, but the open draw meant that
they were drawn together early on. Ironically, despite Meath having
the upper hand, it was Dublin that were installed as favourites
as Sean Boylans side were deemed to be going through a transition
period. Nonetheless, the first match proved to be a tight affair
that ended 1-12 apiece.
The replay saw 60,000 people attend Croke Park for what was to prove
to be another tense affair and once again a draw was the outcome
after extra time. The sides had to meet for the third consecutive
weekend and as was the case in the opening two matches, Dublin allowed
Meath back into the game on more than one occasion with a draw being
the outcome for the third time. The final instalment of this saga
saw Meath triumph by the narrowest of margins and the game will
always be remembered for Kevin Foleys goal following a wonderful
move the full length of the pitch. Meath went on to win the Leinster
final that year and made it to the All-Ireland final, but were defeated
by Down in the final.
