The Late Fr. Tim Leahy Father Tim Leahy was born in Millstream, Abbeyfeale, in 1929. He was the third youngest of eight children and a nephew of Fr. Tom Leahy of the columban Fathers. He received his primary education at Templeglantine National School before joining the Salesian in Pallaskenry in 1944. He continued his education there before going to Melchet Court, Southampton, where he was ordained in 1962. In his youth he was a great athlete and he was particularly good hurler having inherited his sporting skills from his maternal ancestors, the Leahys, from Cregane and Charleville. His work took him to Beirut, The Lebanon, in 1965 where he remained until they were ordered to leave in 1976 due to the war. While there he experienced the terrible sadness of the war. He was directly affected by this when two of his comrades were shot down. He went to Lesotho in South Africa in 1981. While there he assisted and befriended Mandela on his peace-keeping mission. He stayed in Lesotho, working up until 1999 when he returned to Ireland to have a serious operation. He returned to Pallaskenry where he continued his work until 2004 when he came to be confined to a wheelchair. He spent the next four years in the loving care of Chairmoyle Nursing home. He died at the Regional Hospital April 24th 2008. Fr. Tim was laid to rest in the Salesian Community Burial Ground in Pallaskenry. The mass was concelebrated by Fr. John Horgan, provincial assisted by Fr. David Cahill, Fr Hurley, Templeglantine, Fr. Harrington, Rector of Pallaskenry, Canon Neville, Abbeyfeale and his many fellow Salesian priests. He is survived by his brothers Ned (Abbeyfeale), Emmett (Moyvane), sisters Brid Flanagan ( Newcastle West) and Maura Gallahue (Ballyanders).
