Fitzgerald, Gerry

January 18, 2008
The Late Gerry Fitzgerald Gerry Fitzgerald President of Causeway GAA Hurling Club died after an illness bravely borne. Over 80 years of age Gerry lived his whole life in the "Green, green grass of home" of his native Causeway where he was loved and respected by all who had the happy experience of knowing him. He loved his native Causeway but he also had a serious predilection for the green grass of the hurling field. Hurling was his life's passion. Every hurling colleague or indeed opponent would indeed readily testify to that. A sportsman to his very fingertips he hurled with an honest intensity at every practice session and in every match he played. His admiration for every hurler whether team mate or opponent who gave of his best, knew no bounds. Naturally he played most of his hurling with Causeway but when Causeway did not have a team he was just as enthusiastic to hurl with Ballyduff with whom he won a well cherished Senior County Championship medal in 1955 playing at centre back. After a long playing career Gerry continued to play many important roles in the Causeway club. He was a selector of many Causeway teams from underage to senior level and was a great source of encouragement to many aspiring young hurlers. He also liked a game of cards with his friends as they enjoyed a little sustenance and indulged in some humourous banter, particularly if they were recalling many of the hurling matches they had seen or played in. A gentle soul Gerry had simple tastes. He loved his time on this earth and he never allowed the vicissitudes of life to upset him. He would have cherished the fact that both Causeway and Ballyduff Hurling Clubs combined to form a guard of honour at his funeral. To his nieces Margaret and Anne and his neighbours and friends of Causeway Hurling club extends its deepest sympathy. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam crota. Courtesy of The Kerryman 18 January 2008
