Wharton, Mickey

The late Mickey Wharton Mickey Wharton, Kenmare had been seriously ill for some time and his passing was a source of deep regret. For club and county he was regarded as an outstanding hurler over a long period. He was aged 71 years and Johnny Cullotty remembers him making his first appearance for Kerry minor hurlers against Cork in 1952. He was in a fine Kerry team, minus Mick and Brendan Hennessy, who ran Waterford, one of Irelands best, closely in Kenmare 1958. For many years he ran a mini bus service from Kenmare to Waterville. Representatives attendance from all over the district, South Kerry and Beara, all parts of Kerry and outside were present at removal and funeral. These included players who figured with him in 1958 - Johnny Cullotty, Niall Sheehy, Teddy Hennessy and Tom Randles. Kerry County Board was represented by Chairman Sean Walsh, Teddy O'Sullivan, Liam Cotter and John Kelly. Players and officials of later vintage were John Barry, Maurice Leahy, Mike Slattery, Ballyduff; Michael O'Leary, Kilmoyley; Eric Murphy, Mike Kenny and Boxer Slattery, Ballyheigue. Many of his old Kenmare team mates were still here, including those prominent behind the scenes like Bobby Hanley, James Brosnan and two Tom O'Connors. Former Kilgarvan players of his era included Denis and Con O'Sullivan, Dan Healy Shine, Johnny Randles, Dan Healy, Frank Quill. Sympathy is extended to this mother, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and all family members. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of The Kerryman 23 March 2006
