The late John Brennan
The Portmagee Community mourned the death of John Brennan, Kilkeveragh, Portmagee, who died peacefully at his residence on Saturday January 7, 2006, aged 77 years. John was born on April 18 1928, the only son of Maurice and Catherine and had five sisters.
In 1950, John married Eileen O'Connor of Lative, Portmagee, and they had six girls and five boys.
John being the only son, took over the running of the family farm. As well as this John also gave 32 years service as a bartender in the Bridge Bar, Portmagee, which he retired from in April 1993. He really enjoyed this period of his life and the people he got to know at that time remained friends of his for life.
John was an active member of the Fianna Fail party for many years and was a member of the local Cumann. He was a regular at the Fianna Fail meetings, dinner dances and functions. His many colleagues in the Fianna Fail party formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral which was headed by Minister of Sports and Tourism, John O'Donoghue and Councillor Paul O'Donoghue.
John was also a keen GAA supporter and one of his proudest moments was when his grandson Stephen brought the Sam Maguire to his home.
A large crowd attended the removal of his remains from his son's residence to St. Patrick's Church, Portmagee, and burial in the adjoining cemetery on Tuesday, January 10, 2006.
John was a true gentleman and he will be sadly missed by his wife Eileen, his sons Mossie, Johnny, Joseph, Francis and Michael, his daughters Birdie, Kathleen, Mary, Eileen, Ann and Angela, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nephews, nieces, brothers in-law, sister in-law and Frances, his only surviving sister who resides in the USA.
May he rest in peace.
