Newly-crowned Munster club football champions Dr Crokes suffered a surprise defeat to Aidan O'Mahony's Rathmore in the East Kerry SFC final yesterday.

Goals either side of half-time from John Moynihan and Mark Reen (penalty) helped the Cork-border club to a 2-12 to 0-13 victory, and ended Crokes' recent winning streak which yielded a county league and championship double as well as a fourth provincial title in six years at the expense of The Nire last Sunday.

Selector Harry O'Neill hoped the reversal would focus minds ahead of February's All-Ireland semi-final against Corofin.

"We were beaten by a better team," he admitted in the Irish Examiner.

"We started well, but didn't take our goal chances. Rathmore took theirs, and those two goals were the difference on the day. We certainly weren't minding ourselves and won't use the 10-week run we've had as an excuse."
