Double-barrelled delights

Limerick's Andrew La Touche Cosgrave

We've noticed a proliferation of fantastic double-barrelled surnames in the GAA recently.

The delightfully-named Andrew La Touche Cosgrave took his place at wing back on the Limerick side that defeated Cork in the Munster U21 HC on Tuesday night.

Staying in the Treaty County, Cian Magnier Flynn featured at centre forward as Pat Donnelly's charges got the better of Waterford in the Munster minor hurling championship last night.

Conor Giles Doran and Harry Ruddle Redmond were corner back and midfield respectively for Na Deise in the same game.

Meanwhile, the Offaly side that saw off Carlow in last week's Leinster U21 HC semi-final boasted David O'Toole-Greene and Johnny O'Toole-Greene at full back and wing forward respectively.

And Odhran McFadden-Ferry scored a goal for Donegal against Monaghan in the Ulster MFC over the weekend. A commentator's delight!

There was a time when these eloquent multisyllabic names were much less common. After Jimmy Barry-Murphy, one of the most phonetically-pleasing to come to our attention was Tom Stuart-Trainor on the Westmeath team that won the 1995 All-Ireland minor football championship, while Kildare's Stuart Mackenzie-Smith was another favourite around here.

It would probably be cheating to mention Mike Frank Russell, Billy Joe Padden, and Sean Marty Lockhart, though.
