Sudden death of GAA player shocks Kerry

TOMAS 0 CONCHUIR PLAYED IN 2004 A'' RELAND CLUB FINAL

Sadness gripped West Kerry last Saturday as news emerged of the sudden passing of Tomas O Conchuir (35) of Baile Ui Chorrain, Baile na nGall.

The Kerry County Council worker was very well-known and well-liked throughout West Kerry and around the county through many his years of involvement with CLG an Ghaeltacht as a player, trainer and mentor.

Tomas is accredited among those who helped cultivate the golden era enjoyed by CLG an Ghaeltacht in the 2000s, who were Kerry County Champions in 2001 and 2003.

Tomas also played for his club in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day 2004 as An Gaeltacht took on Caltra in the All- Ireland Club Championship Final.

He trained the Gaeltacht minor team that beat neighbouring club Dingle to win the West Kerry Minor Championship just before Christmas.

"We are all deeply saddened at the passing of Tomas O Conchuir," said Cathaoirleach of CLG Daingean Ui Chuis, Micheal O Conchuir.

Tomas always gave his very best when he wore his beloved Gaeltacht jersey and he always wore it with pride and passion. As a player and as a coach for An Ghaeltacht he was always giving of his time and experience.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. "Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis."

Tomas reposed at his home in Baile Ui Chorrain, Baile na nGall last Monday which saw hundreds turn out to pay their respects. Requiem Mass was celebrated in Carrig Church at noon on Tuesday before Tomas was laid to rest in Cill Chuain cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Ciara, mother, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
