Leahy, Emmet

March 03, 2011
The death has taken place of Emmet Leahy, Carrueragh, Moyvane on the 20th February at Kerry General Hospital following a short illness.
Aged 83, Emmet was born in the Millstream. Abbeyfeale on the 30th of November 1927, one of eight children to Delia and Paddy Leahy. He fondly recounted stories of a very happy youth at the Millstream. As a young man he was very involved in the community. He played hurling with his brothers in Templeglantine and was involved with the pioneer association and in drama.
He married Margaret in 1955 and moved to Knockanure where he quickly became part of the local community becoming involved in Macra, the IFA and the Pioneer Association. In later years he was involved in the Parish Council. While hurling was his first love he took great interest in Gaelic football and seldom missed a local match. However, while he supported Kerry, he was a Limerick man at heart and always remained loyal to the green and white.
Emmet was a progressive, hard-working dairy farmer. He led a very busy, industrious life but he relished it. He milked cows up to two years ago and never lost interest in what was happening on the farm and in the dairy industry.
He was a British Freisian breeder and enjoyed much success showing his cattle at the Kerry and Limerick Agricultural Shows.
He was a deeply religious man in a quiet unassuming way and his faith and its expression were at the core of his life.
He was a loyal, loving and devoted husband to his wife Margaret with whom he shared fifty five years of marriage. He enjoyed all the occasions that brought his children, grandchildren and family together and never forgot his life at the Millstream and the brothers and sisters he grew up with. They maintained a strong bond throughout his life and this was evident at the celebration of his golden wedding anniversary which he celebrated with Margaret in April 2005.
He considered himself lucky that all his children were settled locally and he took great interest in their lives and the lives of his seventeen grandchildren. He enjoyed his retirement and enjoyed many holidays together in Ireland and abroad with Margaret. He was a very sociable man who loved meeting people from every walk of life and made great connection with everyone he met, young and old. He had a deep interest in current affairs and loved a lively discussion.
He was predeceased by his sisters Eileen and Breda (Flanagan) and his brothers Fr Tim (Salesian, Pallaskenry) and Jim (Charleville).
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Margaret, his daughters Assumpta and Eileen, his sons Paddy, Willie and Jim, his brother Ned (Abbeyfeale), his sisters Maura (Gallaghue) and Sr Ita (San Francisco) as well as his seventeen grandchildren extended family, neighbours and friends.
