May 11, 2011Surrounded by his family Tom Dowling, 48 St John's Park, Tralee and formerly of Mitchel's Avenue, Tralee passed from this world on Saturday April 30. Tom was born to Catherine and Jack Dowling on December 22 1926 and his only sibling Mary pre-deceased him in July 1999.
Tom attended CBS secondary school and on finishing school he worked in Lipton's before joining Clifford's Cash and Carry as a Sales Representative. After that he worked for many years at Kevin Barry's Foodstore on Rock Street.
Tom first set eyes on the love of his life Elsie O'Shea while working in Lipton's and they married on September 8, 1953. Originally living in Stack's Villas, they moved to St. John's Park in 1962 where they lived happily rearing their five children. As a devoted husband and father Tom showered love and affection on Elsie and all his family.
A keen sportsman Tom played in goal for John Mitchels winning a county championship medal in 1947. He loved fishing and enjoyed the company of friends on the river bank.
He was a great supporter and president of St. Brendan's Park Football Club. Tom also had a great love of classical music and enjoyed many music nights with friends in his own home.
Tom had a great faith, was a daily communicant and member of the Dominican Lay Society.
Tom died following an 18 month illness which was borne with great dignity. He was cared for at home, by Elsie, before spending the last two weeks of his life in the care of the excellent staff of the Bon Secours Hospital.
His remains were removed from Hogan's Funeral Home on Sunday May 1 to St John's Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Monday May 2 followed by burial at new Rath Cemetery.
Tom's removal and huge funeral the following day were a testimony to his popularity and the high regard in which he was held by family, friends and acquaintances.
His passing has left a deep void in the lives of his loving wife Elsie and children, John, Mary, Damien, Elisha and Catherine. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews and nieces.
Tom's family would like to thank sincerely all the doctors, nurses and well wishers for their support and also those who travelled from near and far to be with them at this difficult time.
