The Late Patrick O'Mahony

The death took place on August 19th of Patrick (Pat) O'Mahony of 48 Pairc Chumin, Killarney and formerly of Clahanebawn, Ballyheighue in The Cedar Ward, St. Vincent's Private Hospital, Dublin, surrounded by his family.

He had suffered a short illness, bravely borne, that brought closure to a life that was devoted to his wife Marie, daughter Emma and his large circle of family and friends, both in Killarney and Ballyheigue.

Aged 44, Pat was well known sportsman in north Kerry and was educated in Ballyheigue NS. He soon became involved in Ballyheigue Hurling Club where his physical presence brought him to the attention of the club selectors and in a short time he was playing senior hurling.

The highlight of his career was captaining Ballyheigue on two occasions when they won the County Championships in 1992 and 1996. Both his brothers Liam and Kierán were on that team, which was a great source of pride to him. He was also a member of the successful 1997 and 2000 Championship winning teams and during this time made many friends through hurling.

His father, Christy, had been captain of Ballyheigue's winning team in 1946.

Pat was a sports lover of many codes, especially soccer and rugby. He would plan his holidays for the coming seasons around the fixtures of beloved Liverpool and Munster teams and would travel around Europe to support them. He also played both soccer and Gaelic football with his native Ballyheigue.

He was in employment with Jimmy Browne and his hotel group in Ballyheigue and Killarney for over thirty years. He recently worked on Saturday nights in O Riada's Bar in Ballymacelligott where he enjoyed the company of the local customers and settled in with little fuss.

It was in the Whitegates Hotel, Killarney, where Pat was bar manager, that he met the love of his life, Marie Wade of Woodlawn, who attended the set dancing classes in the bar. She would hand in her handbag to Pat to mind it for her during the sessions there. He finally plucked up the courage to ask her out of a sociable drink in the Grand Hotel and the rest of the courtship led to their eventual marriage on March 31st, 2010 and celebration afterwards in Jack's Coastguard Stationhouse in Cromane. It was a day and night to remember celebrated with their families and close friends.

Pat supported Marie in all her sporting endeavours throughout the county. She competed in triathlons, the Ring of Kerry Open Water Swims and helped her in preparing for her various sporting events.

The birth of their daughter Emma brought a new focus to his life and he absolutely doted on her. She was his pride and joy and he loved nothing better than to show her how to prepare his lobster pot in Clahanebawn, a place he loved since childhood.

Both he and Marie loved to travel throughout Europe during their short but extremely happy time together. They visited his sister Kitty and her husband Maurice in Huddersfield, England on many occasions and both loved to enjoy fine food and wine in the many restaurants in the locality and meet their friends for a sociable drink.

Pat enjoyed the simple things in life. He would collect Emma from school every Friday and they would drive anywhere she wanted to go, from Cork to Ballyheigue. She called it "their fun Fridays",

Pat was a very sociable person. He loved to return to Ballyheigue every Thursday night for a friendly game of cards with family and friends and catch up on all the local news.

He is survived by his wife Marie, daughter Emma, brother Johnny, Liam, Christy, Kierán, sisters Delia, Mary, Dora, Kitty ad Bets and many nieces and nephews.

Removal took place on Saturday from O'Shea's Funeral Home. Killarney to St.Mary's Church, Ballyheigue. Burial took place in St James Cemetery, Ballyheigue.

May he rest in peace.
