A Love of family, sport science and nature

Brendan Shanahan, originally of Moyvane, and later of The Kerries, Tralee, died after a short illness in Bantry General Hospital on Wednesday, June 23.
His untimely death in West Cork while attending his daughter's wedding was a huge shock to his wife Helen, family and frieds.
Brendan was a man of few words but the mention of science and nature, sports or a few words as Gaeilge would make him your best friend.
After the love of his family, he had the most loving relationship with nature as can be seen in his garden in the range and colour of his plants ad also its massive bird population. He was almost on speaking terms with some of his feathered friends.
Brendan enjoyed his student days in UCC, qualifying in dairy science, before progressing on to UCD to qualify in Agricultural science. He was worked for Teagasc initially and later worked with Kerry Group for the greater part of his career.
His standing in the rural community from West Clare, Dingle, Abbeydorney, Castleisland and Killorglin has been reflected in the huge attendance at his removal and burial.
He also had a tremendous love of sport especially Gaelic games and rugby and is a proud winner of a north Kerry championship medal.
He liked nothing better than quoting players positions on the pitch and who scored what in the Kerry teams of the 60's, 70's and 80's. He also enjoyed a few pints with his friends in Hartigans pub in Leeson's Street before and after international rugby games in Landsdowne Road.
Brendans family wish to thank the staff and clergy of Bantry Hospital sincerely for the wonderful care and attention provided during Brendan's final days. Their kindness will never be forgotton.
Many thanks also to the community of Durrus village for their support to the Shanahan family in their time of need.
The removal of Brendan's remains took place from Gleasure's Funeral Home on Friday, June 25 to St John's Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock followed by interment in Realt na Mara cemetery, Churchill.
Brendan will be sadly missed by his loving wife Helen, children Carol, Colin, June, Niamh and Dave , brothers John Joe and Patrick, sons in law David, Carol's fiancé John, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.
