McKenna, Gabriel (Gabe)

The death took place of Gabriel (Gabe) McKenna, Knopogue, Ballyduff. His remains were removed from Lawlor's Funeral Home to SS Peter's & Paul's Church, Ballyduff. Burial was in Rahela Cemetery. Gabe was President of the North Kerry Hurling Board and Vice-President of Ballyduff GAA club at the time of his death and he had served as Chairman of this District Board in the 70s. He was deeply involved with Ballyduff GAA club all his life and was a senior hurling selector for many years being involved in numerous County Championship wins and was also a selector with the County Senior Hurlers for a number of years of intercounty successes. He won minor North Kerry Football Championship medals with Ballyduff in 1944 & 45 with victories over Listowel and Duagh. Gabe won a North Kerry Intermediate Football Championship with the Ballyduff/Ballyconry combination in 1959 when they defeated Ballydonoghue 4-3 to 1-2 in the final. He was also involved with the Feale & Cashen Net Fisherman's Association, the Fine Gael Party and enjoyed the game of '41'. A Guard of Honour was provided at his removal and burial by Ballyduff GAA Club, Fine Gael, Fishermen Association and friends. Sympathy is extended to his family, relatives and friends.
