O'Donoghue Denis J

The late Denis J O'Donoghue The train journey from Croke Park last Sunday became a longer and sadder of as word spread among the Kerry GAA fraternity of the sad passing of that great Glenflesk stalwart, Denis J O'Donoghue. Denis J was a staunch St. Agatha's man and served as vice-president of the club in recent years. You wouldn't thin out the crowd too much if you asked for a 'Mr O'Donoghue' out there but if you asked if 'Denis J' or 'Jerh of Curreal' was there, everyone from the smallest child to the biggest adult would immediately know who you meant - and if Glenflesk were playing, then Denis J would have been there. His sons played integral parts in Glenflesk's O'Donoghue Cup victories of recent times, while All Ireland Junior winner Paud kicked the winning point on the club's proudest day when they won the Millennium Cup - and there was no one prouder than his father. His daughter Peggy currently serves as Coiste Ciarrai Bord na nOg secretary. Denis J's house was not just filled with laughter, but also with music and his children, and more recently his grandchildren would bring home the Scor medals to prove it. Denis J passed away peacefully on Sunday evening after a brief illness and he will be missed far past Glenflesk's borders. A large crowd attended when he reposed at Murphy's Funeral home in Barraduff on Tuesday and again at the Mass at St Agath's Church and burial at Killaha Cemetery on Wednesday. Condolences to his sons David, John, Gerry, and Paud, daughters Peggy, Mary and Helen, and to his sister Hannah. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis. - Kerry's Eye, 28th August 2008
