Corn Uí Mhuirí final: Hayes hat-trick ends Tralee's 13-year wait

February 22, 2020

Tralee CBS bridged a 13-year gap at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Tralee CBS 4-15

St Brendan's College, Killarney 1-15

Conor Hayes bagged 3-2 as Tralee CBS were crowned Corn Uí Mhuirí champions for the first time since 2007 at Fitzgerald Stadium.

The scoreline was harsh on St Brendan's College who were well in contention before the Kerins O'Rahilly's corner forward netted twice in the last seven minutes to hand Tralee CBS the local bragging rights.

Jordan Kissane scored an early goal to help the winners to a 1-4 to 0-0 lead after 10 minutes before an Emmet O'Shea penalty brought St Brendan's back into it. But a stunning goal from Hayes late in the half sent Tralee into the break with a commanding 2-10 to 1-4 lead.

But the Killarney school were far from finished and, with the wind to their backs, dominated the third quarter to reduce the deficit to the minimum, 1-12 to 2-10. Hayes eventually opened Tralee's second half account in the 49th minute before Kerry U20 Sean Quilter made it a three-point game.

Despite having a penalty saved by Eoin O'Sullivan in the 50th minute, Tralee CBS pushed on and made sure of victory thanks to Hayes' two late strikes.
