New Wicklow senior hurling manager Seamus Murphy believes that the standards have dropped in the county.

Murphy will lead his new charges into competitive action for the first time this Sunday when the Garden County host DCU in the Kehoe Cup.

The Wexford native has a vast knowledge of the Wicklow club scene and he feels that there has been a decline in the standard over the last few years.

Speaking to the Wicklow People he said: "There's no doubt that the standard has dropped throughout the county in the club scene and that transfers through to your county teams and that's clear to be seen as Wicklow contested Christy Ring Cup finals four or five years ago.

"One of the only ways forward is to make sure you have a good underage structure in place, have good competitions for all ages, and certainly introducing an under-21 club championship would be beneficial as a lot of players in that age group are lost to the game."
