Dual star under threat in Wexford

October 07, 2015

There should be no dual player on the Wexford U16, U17 and minor hurling squads.

A report aimed at addressing the decline of minor hurling in Wexford is proposing that no player be allowed to represent the county in both hurling and football beyond the age of 15.

The Examiner reports that the minor working group, set up by board chairman Diarmuid Deveraux in response to the Model County's shock MHC defeat to Westmeath in May, is recommending that there should be no dual player on the county U16, U17 and minor hurling squads.

"The current Wexford policy on dual players has not brought any real success to either code," states the report which was compiled by the working group of Michael O'Grady, Jim Bolger, Justin Prendergast (RIP) and Dave Bernie.

"It is generally agreed now that it is not physically possible to maximise one's potential at both codes.

"We suggest that dual players be allowed on squad teams up to the age 15. After that players should opt for one code only. This will give other players a chance of representing their county."

Other issues that are causing concern include the failure of so many clubs to drive the Hurling 365 programme, the glut of fixtures at certain times of the year, the fear that the unique Wexford hurling culture is diminishing and the poor standard of hurling in many clubs and schools.
