A former Gort and Galway underage hurler has returned from Brazil to attend Sunday's All-Ireland hurling final.
Leonardo Gomes lived in the south Galway town for the best part of a decade before returning to his motherland with his family two years ago. Once tipped for big things in the sport, the 18-year-old arrived back in Gort on Tuesday where he was greeted by his brother Anderson and his former team and school-mates.
Kilcheest National School principal Francis O'Connor told the Connacht Tribune: "Leo was the model. He was the one. When he started, every other one [Brazilian] said this is what I want to play. The club has had a lot of success since he left, winning county titles, and there is no doubt that if he had stayed he would have won a county medal. We are not saying that flippantly."
Leonardo will watch the clash with Kilkenny from Hill 16.
"Yeah, I am really excited for the match," he said.
"I have been practising a bit but when you walk around with a stick [in Brazil] everybody is thinking what is he going to do next? Is he going to rob the shop?"
