Wicklow manager Casey O'Brien has stood down from his position.

O'Brien announced the decision following their Christy Ring Cup relegation play-off win over Mayo at Cusack Park, Mullingar last Saturday.

The Garden County have endured a tough year and O'Brien admitted to the Wicklow People that after six years in the job, it was time to step down.

"I kind of knew that this was going to be my last year. It's the sixth year. It's a long time. I spoke to Robert and Emmet and Brian and we kind of knew," said O'Brien.

"They've been six great years. Things didn't go great this year but I can honestly say I've enjoyed every minute of it."

He added: "Managing the county is a big commitment but I never seen it as a big commitment. I like doing it. I never seen it as a sacrifice. It's the same with the players. I don't buy into this theory of it being a big commitment. If you want to play county hurling or football then play it. If you see it as a hindrance then don't play, there's no point in playing."
