Handball: Shanks storms to Gloves title

November 09, 2015

Armagh's Charlie Shanks

Armagh's Charlie Shanks claimed the final National Ranking event of the year by storming to his second Gloves title in Sunday's final win over first time finalist Peter Funchion in St Pauls GAC, Belfast.

Kilkenny man Funchion was the real surprise package of the weekend but was well worth his place in the final having saw off last years All-Ireland Minor Champion Johnny Woods in the QF, before holding his nerve to take out gifted young Clare man Colin Crehan in an epic 11-10 tiebreak on Sunday morning.

Shanks stormed to a 21-6 first game win against Funchion. But Peter showed he wasnt here just to make up the numbers by racing to an 11-2 lead in the second. In the end though, it was Shanks' experience and firepower that proved too much as he took the title with a 21-12 win.

In the Ladies, Antrim's Aisling Reilly capped off a sensational 2015 by winning her home club tournament with a 21-6, 21-14 final win over Down's Lorraine Havern in a dominant display. The past year has seen Aisling win the All-Ireland, US, World, & now the Golden Gloves titles.
