Davy Fitzgerald believes the Leinster SHC would be a poorer place without Galway.

The Tribesmen are threatening to leave Leinster after seven years in protest at the Leinster Council's refusal to grant them home games and allow their minor and U21 teams to play in the province.

But speaking to the Irish Daily Star at yesterday's launch of the 2017 Bord na Mona Walsh Cup in Croke Park, new Wexford manager Fitzgerald expressed the hope that the Westerners' would remain in Leinster.

"To me, even before I came to Leinster, I liked watching them in the Leinster championship. It made it more interesting. It gave it a new dynamic," he said.

"I think it made it even more competitive and you can look at it two ways: you can look for easier matches to go on and on (in a competition) or else you want a competitive Leinster championship or a competitive Munster championship. I think, personally, that it's not a bad thing. I like where they are.

"I like them in there. I'm with Wexford now and the easiest thing I could say 'sure put them into Munster, there's another five teams in there and make it six unreal teams there'.

"But I would presume, from a hurling point of view, as a hurling man looking at it, that you want good games. You want Kilkenny to be challenged if they're up there. Whether that's Galway, Dublin, Offaly, Wexford, you want it and the more teams you have upping the bar, the better."
