Galway SHC: Canning marks Portumna return with winner

Joe Canning returned from injury to fire Portumna to victory over Liam Mellows in the Galway SHC yesterday.

The county star scored the winning point as the 2014 All-Ireland club kingpins shaded the SHC 'A' Group 2 second round clash in Athenry by 0-16 to 1-12. Conor Kavanagh netted in the first half for Mellows, who continued to lead until late points from Sean Heagney and Canning gave Portumna the win.

Reigning champions Sarsfields suffered a 1-14 to 2-14 defeat to Gort in Ballinasloe, with Paul Killilea and Michael Mullins scoring the winners' goals. 

Kevin Keane and Jack Coyne raised green flags for Castlegar in their 2-15 to 0-12 victory over Turloughmore at Pearse Stadium, while Niall Healy posted 0-9 for Craughwell in their 1-21 to 0-15 win over Padraig Pearses in Athenry.

Ten points from Niall Keary steered Loughrea to their second win in as many weeks against 2013 All-Ireland champions St. Thomas' (0-14 to 1-10) at Kenny Park, while Jarlath Mannion bagged a hat-trick of goals for Cappataggle in their 6-20 to 1-11 drubbting of Ardrahan in Ballinasloe.

In the SHC 'B', there were wins for Tommy Larkins and Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry over Moycullen and Kilnadeema/Leitrim respectively.
