Joyce, Jackie

July 26, 2013
The death took place last week of Jackie Joyce of Carheenlea who was the oldest parishioner in Lackagh parish. In his ninety eighth year, Jackie had lived life to the full and was hugely popular among neighbours, family and friends.
Jackie was a life-long member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, joining Lackagh centre while the association was still in its infancy in the parish. Jackie proudly wore the pioneer pin and served in many capacities in the association. Jackie farmed all his life and was known to be an excellent judge of livestock and loved working on the soil. He was one of the first to own a tractor and stayed driving the tractor while still well into advanced years.
Jackie was part of the Coolarne hurling team that was formed in 1935 that introduced the now famous black and white hooped jerseys to Turloughmore.
A keen hurler, Jackie was always handed the man marking job on the better players, at which he excelled. Jackie supported Turloughmore and Galway hurling club at all levels and proudly held the Leinster Hurling Bob O'Keeffe Cup in his own kitchen last year, brought to him by his neighbour Fergal Moore who captained Galway to their first ever Leinster title.
Jackie was a great storyteller and his party piece always centred around the famous tooth and his visit to the dentist. Jackie was a wonderful family person and just six months ago his wife of sixty seven years went to her eternal reward before him. They reared a great family and Pat O'Loughlin and the late Jim 'Goosheen' O'Brien were also very much part of the Joyce family.
The remains of Jackie Joyce were removed from Lackagh Mortuary Chapel to the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh. Following requiem mass celebrated by Fr Gussie O'Brien, MSC who was joined by Fr Michael Goaley, burial took place in Lackagh Cemetery.
Jackie Joyce is survived by daughters Mary (Madden) and Peggy (Mulryan) sons Tom, Michael, Sean and Pat O'Loughlin, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
