HL quarter-final: Canning fires Galway past Wexford

March 16, 2019

Galway's Joe Canning races away from Wexford's Matthew O'Hanlon

Galway 3-21

Wexford 3-11

Joe Canning hit 0-15 (0-14 from placed balls) as Galway produced a dominant second half performance to overpower Wexford in their Allianz Hurling League quarter-final at Pearse Stadium.

The understrength Tribesmen outscored the visitors by 3-8 to 0-6 after the restart, despite playing against the wind.

Conor McDonald gave Wexford the perfect start with an eighth-minute goal which goalkeeper Fergal Flannery would have been disappointed not to save. With Canning in unerring form, Galway recovered to lead by 0-8 to 1-3 before McDonald bagged his second goal after a Lee Chin point had left the minimum in it.

Points from Canning and Cathal Mannion edged Galway back in front, but a third goal by Chin after Flannery had saved Cathal Dunbar's initial shot helped Wexford to a 3-5 to 0-13 lead at the break.

Despite facing the elements in the second half, Micheal Donoghue's charges were level within a minute from another Canning free before Cathal Mannion scored their first goal. Niall Burke and Brian Concannon tagged on points before Niall Burke raised another green flag to put the winners in control.

Canning and Mannion added further points and Wexford's fate was sealed when Tadhg Haran registered a third Galway major after Fanning had initially denied Canning with a great save.
