Roscommon captain Conor Devaney believes that they must reach the Super 8s this year in order to show they are making progress.

A win against Galway in the Connacht SFC final will guarantee the Rossies a place in the newly formed Super 8s, while a defeat will see them have to play an extra game to get there.

Obviously, Devaney is keen to take the direct route into the last eight and he stressed to the Roscommon Herald that this is all a work in progress.

"We have to get to the Super 8s consistently in order to get to the next level. I have said that before. Those three games every year - whether we get any further than that - I think playing those three games would make us a more consistent team at a higher level, definitely," said Devaney.

"We will be going into this game with people on the outside expecting us not to do well, but, of course, we will be expecting to do well.

"It is very unlikely that the same outcome as last year will happen - where we won by nine points. It is a rare occasion that we would beat Galway by that much so that would be very unlikely.

"But we would still be confident that we could put in a good performance and be very close to them in the last couple of minutes. Then you don't know what is going to happen. It could go either way."
