Padraic Mannion insists there were positives to Galway's Allianz Hurling League campaign, despite their failure to gain promotion from Division 1B.

Last year's All-Ireland and Allianz League champions were pipped for promotion by Limerick, but Mannion says the campaign served its purpose.

"At the start of the league, we were a little bit behind in our preparation in terms of where we would have liked to be. But that went hand-in-hand with the success we had in winning the All-Ireland," the defender told the Irish Daily Star at yesterday's launch of the 2018 Cul Heroes collection.

"Obviously, we would have liked to have progressed as far as we could in the league, but we still got to see a few new players that got game time. I think we did improve with each game, we lost to Wexford but we were improving throughout the games.

"Sure ultimately that's the main thing in the league, you just want to improve and get players' some experience and get everyone back into it.

"I think we did all those things in the league."
