Galway United's Padraic Cunningham celebrates scoring against St Pat's Athletic

Galway forward Padraic Cunningham says leaving Galway United FC to line-out for Kevin Walsh's side this season was "a tough call".

Cunningham revealed he sat down for talks with the county board during the winter before joining the Tribesmen's squad, having turned down a professional contract with SSE Airtricity League champions Cork City.

He has since impressed in this month's FBD League outings and is presently pushing for a starting berth in the Division 2 champions' full-forward line when they take on Tyrone in their Allianz League opener on Sunday week.

"It was a tough call, a huge call," Cunningham is quoted saying by RTE Sport. "I did a lot of thinking over it, even with the whole family. I decided that Gaelic football was the right route to go down, even though I loved my time at Galway United.

"Now I want to push on and make the team.  I'm hoping I can keep pushing myself to achieve that."

Paying tribute to Walsh, he added: "Everyone knows when he played what he was like in midfield, the hero he was; now as a coach you are looking up to him, learning from him."
