Damien Comer has called for Sunday's Connacht SFL Round Five meeting between Galway and Roscommon to double up as the final.
Both teams are already through to the competition final with a round to spare, which renders this weekend's clash a dead rubber. At present, the decider is scheduled for February 18th, after the first two round of the league have been played. Comer wants the GAA to show some consideration for the players and scrap the mid-February meeting:
"Common sense has to prevail in these situations," the Annaghdown clubman commented this afternoon at the launch of the 2018 Allianz Football League at Dublin Port Authority. "We're on about compacting games, it's just an extra game, it's pointless.
"I think it should all be played off this Sunday and give players a chance to take a weekend off or something, give a chance for recovery in that weekend off during the league. Hopefully, they'll come to a compromise. It makes sense. I don't know which party isn't agreeing to it.
"The fact that it's two games, it's more people coming to the games, it generates more gate money, that could be the reason or whatever. I think just for player welfare it makes sense to play it all on Sunday.
"It's the same two teams that will be playing this weekend that will be playing in February. So, why not just put it together and have it as the FBD final? I think it makes sense for everyone. You're on about player welfare; that break is nice to get after the first two league game - you get a break, you regroup."
