Liam Mellows joint-captain Aonghus Callanan has hailed the impact that Louis Mulqueen has made on the club.

The Clare native guided the city side to their first county SHC title in 47 years when they defeated Gort in the county final last Sunday afternoon.

Callanan, who was one of the stars of the show, heaped praise on Mulqueen, who guided the side to the title at his first attempt.

"It has been numerous years here playing, being in relegation or whatever, but Louis Mulqueen, in fairness to him, came in this year and gave us belief and the lads just committed to it," Callanan told the Connacht Tribune.

"We trained harder than ever and it just all paid off. It is great after all these years to finally be getting something out of it. Ah, it's just incredible."

Callanan is looking forward to the All-Ireland club SHC semi-final clash against defending champions Cuala, but he knows that will be a tough test for them.

"Somebody mentioned it there that we are only one game away from Croke Park. Cuala are next and we are well familiar with Mattie Kenny.

"Look, we will enjoy this win. There is no doubt about that. It has been a long time coming. Before Christmas, then, we will settle down and see what the new year brings."
