Liam Mellows' Aonghus Callanan blasts in a goal against Gort in the Galway SHC final

There was a surprise result in today's Galway SHC final as Liam Mellows upset the odds against Gort.

The Louis Mulqueen coached city side captured the club's first county title since 1970 with a fully deserved 3-12 to 1-15 victory at Pearse Stadium.

First-half goals from Aonghus Callanan and Tadhg Haran laid the foundations for this long overdue success.

The underdogs found themselves 2-7 to 0-8 to the good at the half-time whistle.

Corner-forward Haran then turned provider for Conor Kavanagh who raised his team's third green flag in the second-half while Gort finished the game with 14 men after Michael Mullins was shown a red card.

To their credit, Gort refused to throw in the towel and their perseverance was rewarded with an injury-time Richie Cummins goal but time ran out on them and it's Liam Mellows who are celebrating an eight county success this evening.

They will now fly the Galway flag in the last four of the All-Ireland series against reigning champions Cuala.
