Marty Clarke - What could have been

(Oldest Posts First)

Very sorry to here Marty Clarke has had to call it a day , savage loss at his best for Down and GAA as a whole , should be remembered for the player he was in his pomp , not the shadow that emerged later .
I seen him in HQ and he was awesome , like a ciaran McDonald , d connilly unmarkable ,
Best of luck in whatever he goes onto ,

It's a terrible shame.

We non-Down folk only really saw flashes of his massive ability due to his spells in Australia and his illness, but what we did see could be magical at times. I particularly remember him destroying my own county in the 2005 All-Ireland minor final, and his inspiring Down on their All-Ireland run in 2010.

Hope he prospers in whatever he puts his mind to in future.

Would echo that.

I have 2 outstanding memories of him as a player.

The first was during his school days where he, like a few others, promised so much and you watched him and thought "nah, he can't keep up that standard all the way to intercounty level".

The second is his performances throughout the 2010 season. He more than realised his potential. As well as all the natural ability he had, he was a leader at just 22/23 years of age. He'd have made every team in the country at that time.

Wishing him all the best with his condition and in all future endeavours. Hopefully he gets involved in coaching as I think his time in Australia could give a different perspective to what the traditional coaches offer.

I would echo the sentiments expressed here already. He was a gifted player who we sadly didn't see enough. I remember seeing him action twice in 2010 in the league and championship. His quality was obvious and he was just a real quality operator in everything he did. Best wishes to him in his health and future endeavors.

He was the best player i ever seen play in the MacRory cup, he absolutely ran the show for Kilkeel in 05 and 06. He deserved to win at least one for his performances those years.

I read today he only played 34 games for Down. Such a shame. Great player.
