Connacht tertiary competition ie FBD league

(Oldest Posts First)

Looked up wiki and this stated that the FBD league only started in 1995. Was there a precursor to this competition, akin to Leinster's O'Byrne Cup, Ulster's McKenna Cup and Munster's McGrath Cup?

Don't think so. Think there was nothing there before the FBD League, which began as a simple 5-team league if I remember rightly.

Nothing there before.
Connacht more competitive with the rest of Ireland since.
Puts the call for scrapping these competitions into context

The gael linn cup was played in Connacht before the fbd replaced it in the mid nineties, it was a straight knockout competition between the 5 counties. It was usually played between the end of the national football league and the start of the championship.

Really? Jaysus never heard of it I don't think. So it was like a championship dress rehearsal?
