Bordering Counties Who Dont Have Much Of A Rivalry

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Its xmas week so fairly slow in GAA news. i was just looking at a map of Ireland the other day and noticed how some counties bordered each other but would not have a rivalry or a derby of much notice. I know most of these are where provincial boundaries are but some are within provincial boundries, Can anyone tell of any bordering counties that dont have much of a rivalry or actually get on well?

Westmeath and Cavan too. The border is very short as well as being in a different province.
Roscommon is in a different province too but there would be fair rivalry around Athlone with Westmeath.
Offaly Meath and Longford would be considered as main rivals.

Leitrim has good rivalry with Sligo and Roscommon.

Leitrim and Fermanagh would have less rivalry then with Cavan.

Mayo and Sligo, Dublin and Wicklow. I wouldn't say theres much rivalry between Kilkenny-Laois or Kilkenny-Carlow either...

Rivalry is there in hurling but not football

Dublin and Louth don't border each other thanks to the small coast line of Meath wedged in between. Louth main rivals is Meath due to the Royals been our only Wee Leinster neighbour. The rest of our neighbours our in Ulster. Half of Louth borders Meath.

Derry and Fermanagh don't border each other. Who would be Fermanaghs main rivals?

How many times have Donegal/ Letrim met in competitive games in the last 50 years? No rivalry simply because they don't meet

meath v offaly would be a friendly rivalry compared to meath v kildare, v w.meath or v dublin or louth. meath dont really take the rivalry with cavan seriously but i think cavan take it serious. most meath people wouldnt pass any remarks on cavan as opposed to any other county.

meath have a friendly hurling rivalry with westmeath as the border area on both sides is predominantly hurling instead of football, so both counties in these areas would not have a huge amount of intrest in football. cavan border stretches down here in parts as well which prob waters down the football rivalry with cavan. i think thats why cavan and westmeath dont have much rivalry, the north westmeath area is nearly all hurling strongholds

meaths most bitter rivalrys are with dublin and louth, even if you dont live near the border. the meath v westmeath rivalry would not be nearly as bitter, most meath fans wish westmeath well against dublin, while westmeath fans love to see meath beat dublin also. this has become very common since the celtic tiger, westmeath fans have become a bit like meath, anyone but dublin!

Meath/Cavan used to be big rivals, but it hasn't been significant since the 50's really. We've only met 6 times in the championship in 130 years of competition, and only once in the last 60 years.

Whenever Meath and Cavan meet in the league some people try to educate others about how Cavan/Meath is a derby game, but in my opinion if you've to tell someone that someone is their rival, it's not a rivalry.

If you are measuring on bitterness then Offaly v Westmeath fits the bill.

True but the nearest club to the Cavan border is a football club ( and it's a short border)
I think it's down to the lack of matches between the two.
