Looks suspiciously like a move is afoot to silence voices like Joe Brolly who is a lone voice in Gaa that is not afraid to call things as they are. Yes it is an opinion put out there by an official but be sure after this week where Joe has left Croke Park & the GAA with egg on their face with his brillant insightful article that moves are afoot in typical Gaa political style to sideline Joe & others who dare speak out. Unfortunately we see here that a post is closed & as no explaination as to why, we can only surmise that someone didn't like the views aired & complained. In the Gaa world which is considered one of the most democratic organisations it is extremely worrying to see developments like this, group think at the top levels of the Association is why there is such frustration at Grassroots level.

The suggestion for this has come from Tyrone GAA, not from Croke Park. It's just part of their ongoing issues with the media so I wouldn't pay any attention to it whatsoever.

Why shouldnt they be taken to task?

The likes of Joe arent "telling it as it is" or whatever that term is meant to mean. No one knows exactly how it is, its simply a person giving their opinion as to their view as to how it is.

Players and management are taken to task for bringing the game into disrepute for their comments, should the same not apply. Saying as it is didnt for example need Joe Brolly to question the character of Sean Cavanagh as a man. Why shouldnt he be taken to task for comments that go beyond whats required. Maybe they would then actually get back to taking about the games they are watching rather than trying to come up with remarks which achieve nothing other than notoriety dressed up as "saying it as it is"

That along with other comments have gone over the top where there was no need, frankly speaking as members of the organisation in the roles they have they should have the same rules applied in my opinion

It's a pity punditry can only be one of two extremes. Bland clichéd platitudes or over-the-top controversial look-at-me extreme criticism.

I don't like Brolly for the most part but don't agree in the slightest with silencing pundits like him unless they are saying things very derogatory or personal about people.

The suggestion for this has come from Tyrone GAA, not from Croke Park. It's just part of their ongoing issues with the media so I wouldn't pay any attention to it whatsoever.

Two things censorship , freedom of the press , we don't half love our rules and blaming people , its hilarious some of the things that have been said about Brolly and others on here , yet we want to curtail freedom of speech on TV , lets be clear if you are not operating in an official capacity there is no governance bar maybe your employer (RTE , INDEPENDENT News etc) that's the way it should be .

It is not possible to silence these pundits. A word in their ear maybe but any attempt to stop them talking would be met with resistance and articles in newspapers up and down the country to let everyone know what is going on.

while i think it is slippery slope in relation to punditry,
the negativity with all things about the game every dirty tackle every dirty play is aired over again and again, in football very seldom is good skill show over and over. highlights on a match and it will show the dirty tackle or the fight rarely the good scores.
this mindset is hard to change and i think this is what the top brass have to be insisting to tv companies if they want to be included in the next tv deals.

TV station don't show all dirty tackles is every other sport , in some sports they are brushed over.

When are people going to realise that Brolly is just having a bit of craic?

It was the same when he was a player blowing kisses to the Hill. It is all just looking for a reaction.

I think Tyrone have justification for their frustration with the media, apologies not the media just RTE. How were RTE sanctioned for the callous nature of the broadcast which brought about the issue? In an amateur organisation media access is a privilege not a right and until the media realize this and stop making hay of hard working honest amateurs then I expect more friction in the future. Also Brolly's character assassination on Sean Cavanagh wouldn't endear RTE to me if I were a Tyrone man. Sanctions can be brought when Tyrone do something wrong, standing up for themselves should never be wrong in anyones book.

I agree with you about Brolly not being silenced. You can't gag free speech so long as you aren't enticing hatred. You would be doing well to do that in the sunday game studios.

In relation to Tyrone I want to know why they should be sanctioned? I fully back their stance. No more than you should gag someone you should not force someone to say something.

Everybody is entitled to their personal opinions but to broadcast them on TV and targeting players is a different matter, we already have 2 eejets on TV that used their public platform to insult players, they never apologised to the players, we all know the reason why Tyrone management won't speak to RTE and if Mayo had any sense they would do the same after the debacle before the 2016 replay

This is not North Korea - yet!! How can you take a person to task - sacking him is what you are suggesting - for expressing his opinion on TV? He hasn't broken any law and is entitled to speak out on anything he sees fit - as long as it is within the law. It is an appalling suggestion you make he can annoy, infuriate but he can also speak what a lot of people are thinking. I understand the issue Tyrone have with RTE but that is nothing to do with Brolly nor should it.

I think Joe Brolly goes away over the top. I don't know whether it's excitement or whatever but there's no need to question someones character. After all they're just amateurs. I normally turn over to BBC if it's the championship and there's none of that crap on there. Sky sports don't entertain that kinda stuff either. Even TG4 is much more professional in their commentary.

They are all members of the organisation that is the GAA and should be subject to the same scrutiny as players etc.

And where did i say anything about sacking him?

So you think its ok to attack Sean Cavanaghs character for example, attack the likes of Rob Hennely because of his job and work with the GAA? Everything is alright these days as long as its it done in the guise of "saying it how it is" when in reality saying it as it is, is just an excuse for ignorance. I mean attacking the character of Sean Cavanagh and the comments against Marty Morrisey are just giving his opinion.

For example if i sat in a meeting and insulting a fellow staff member the same as Brolly did with Marty Morrisey absoloutely i would be taken to task.

Joe Brolly frequently makes some excellent points yet is incapable of making those points without attacking someone or something. Thats actually a very poor reflection to be honest.

Can't stand Brolly but free speech must be retained at all times.
That said the real issue for me is Brolly's exposure - Sindo, Sunday Game, Gaelic Life as well as a recent report on RTE (non-GAA related). Let him say what he likes so long as there is a balanced side of things. Sick of 'shur Joe changes like the weather, but that's Joe'. Good luck to that rubbish.
We can't and shouldn't silence him by law but at least give someone the platform (looking at a national paper and RTE in particular) to take him to task on a constant basis. He's bizarrely the most vocal and least objective commentator in print or tv. The Donald Trump of the GAA.

Also from the point of view that he's a GAA member, regardless of public platform, the GAA should be able to challenge him

It's an absolutely ridiculous suggestion that won't get out past the walls from where it was first aired!
Aside from free-speech and all that, the media have to work within the confines of liable laws etc, so if Tyrone or whoever it may be feel aggrieved by what Brolly etc say, take them to court for defamation of character etc, that's if they can prove it.
The GAA don't have any power over the media bar the selling of rights for their games to them.
For what it's worth, Tyrone might be better off forgetting about RTE/media completely, rather than throwing their toys out of the pram when they feel they have been hard done by. This suggestion just makes them look even more bitter and silly.
