As an ad once said 'You'll never know unless you go'. Supporting your own team too.

What an ironic place to hold it, in a place where i believe the playing of gaelic games is banned! Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 11/11/2016 18:34:57 1933663 Link 1 |

There was a similar event in 2013. I often wonder do the Dubs and All Blacks swap a few notes on strength and conditioning etc. The All Blacks are always a few years ahead and slimmed down into an exceptionally mobile team with great stamina during and after the 2015 WC. AIG brings them together, i'd be surprised if the Dubs didn't avail of some information that could be applied. And i'm not criticising them if they do. Fair point. Maybe some AIG honcho has Castleknock College connections. Plenty of good publicity for both.

Could I be so bold as to ask why you do not believe Castleknock College has banned the playing of gaelic games? From speaking to alumni I believe playing rugby is not just encouraged but compulsory, and while there are many sports that can be competed in the College have banned the playing of gaelic games for close to 100 years now. To be honest I see this as something to be pitied rather than bothered about. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 11/11/2016 22:26:48 1933705 Link 0 |
Agreed but there are far more schools where the playing of foreign games like rugby are 'discouraged' to put it mildly

There is a big difference between being discouraged and banned! Many schools don't have the access to proper rugby coaching which would be one reason for Rugby not being facilitated. Where as I'm sure there is GAA development officer designated to the Castleknock area alone given the money the Dublin county board spends on coaching (not a dig). Yeah cause there would no rugby coaches available to a school like Colaiste Eoin in Stillorgan/Blackrock ! rugby is banned there and are open about this. "The difference between Coláiste Eoin and the majority of schools in the country is that Coláiste Eoin is an all-Irish school," says principal Séan Ó Leidhin. "To preserve and protect the ethos of the school it is very important that the emphasis is on culture and Gaelic games are a central aspect of that culture." This view is also supported by Coláiste Eoin's Proinsias de Poire, who is involved in football as well as the school's long musical tradition. "In Coláiste Eoin we are very proud of our legacy and heritage. Let us have that and let other schools have their own. People understand when they come to Coláiste Eoin that this is the spirit and ethos here and we make no apologies for that. It's unique and long may it continue." Good luck to them but it is silly to criticise one rugby school for banning GAA but turning a blind eye when it happens the other way around in GAA schools across the country bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4624 - 12/11/2016 10:27:19 1933735 Link 0 |
I was merely making the point that there is a difference between banning something and discouraging it. I wouldn't be aware of the school you are speaking of but for me that's wrong if rugby is banned. In Monaghan there is one rugby development officer for the whole county working on a part time basis. I think there are 11 secondary schools in Monaghan and they would all avail of his time at some point over the year. And another point you can see the benefits the players who come from a GAA back round have gained, especially in terms of fielding the high ball. On Saturday night last Andrew Trimble made a complete mess of a high ball at a crucial stage in the game when you compare that to how Kearney was attacking the high ball all game. You can be as PC as you like but is it not shocking to see a school in Ireland ban the playing of Irish games? keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 12/11/2016 13:50:51 1933764 Link 0 |
