Am i wrong or did rte not show any clips of the great 1991 Down team being presented to the crowd? Bad form if not.

Yeah it was poor form from RTE alright
not to show even a few minutes of it.
They were a great team and won an
exciting match they do not deserve to
be slighted like that.

Did not realize RTE did not show them. On the Big screen yesterday they had some good footage up from that afternoon they won. It would have been great to have seen more. They were a fantastic team. The Hill was all read and black that afternoon.

They were a brilliant flair team with some great footballers. Tipp's 1991 winners were shown on rte 2 weeks ago and i was looking forward to a few clips of DJ Kane, Peter Whitnell, Barry Breen, Greg Blaney, Conor Deegan, Mickey Linden, James McCartan et al. I was 15 when they beat Meath in a great all-ireland final and the teams that win when your that age tend to make an impression on you.

In many ways Down 1991 were the least feted all-ireland winners of recent times. They received 4 all-stars, the same number as Dublin who were beaten after the saga with Meath (first round game!). Meath received 6 all-stars. The 4 game Meath v Dublin saga has been commemorated on various occasions this year so it's only fair Down should get a few minutes coverage.

If RTÉ didn't show them then it's bad form alright, they may have broke our hearts that day but they were a brilliant team and proved it 3 years later when they beat the Dubs to win it again. In many ways Down's achievement that year were somewhat overshadowed by the Meath/Dublin saga and Meath's 10 game run, it was the only time in living memory that I can remember a groundswell of support for that Meath team and there was genuine sympathy when they were beaten but that Down team was special and contained some all time greats such as Blaney, Linden et all and they gave other northern teams great hope so they truly deserve plaudits 25 years on.

Always liked Down. Its a sixties thing as like us they won three all Irelands in the decade although ours was a three in a row. Then both counties came with great teams (them in '91 and '94 and us in '98 and '01) in recent years. Poor form by RTE as they always used to show the full presentation of the winning team from 25 yrs previous.

I was 8 when we won that All Ireland. My first match I ever went
to was the Down v Armagh first round match in Newry. Was at
every Championship match bar the final which I never had a
ticket for. Remember when Meath made their comeback and
Mickey Linden missed a great goal chance to kill it off I was so
nervous I couldn't watch the tv any more until the final whistle
went.

Very fair post. Meath were part of a great season of football and after losing the 1990 final it was a hard one to take after 10 games. But they took it with dignity. It heralded the end of a lot of Meath greats like Mick Lyons, Gerry McEntee etc too as they were ambushed by my own county in 1992 in Navan.

Very true.

Can't understand how they don't show the jubilee teams on all-ireland anymore. I used love to see how some of the greats you wouldn't normally see on tv were ageing too!

Next year it'll be Donegal and God help us Joe Brolly blowing kisses in 2018!

It was a tight finish alright! Meath came from 11pts down to lose by 2. Liam Hayes scored a screamer of a goal a few minutes fro the end to bring it back to 2.

That Down team was involved in many classics. The 1994 Ulster first round v Derry is one of the best games ever played.

That Meath team was an excellent side and will always
be remembered for the four game saga with Dublin. I
remember Mickey Linden saying that Meath fans came
to congratulate Down on their way home which was
truly gracious.

That Meath team played hard but when the game was over it was over. I'll never forget when Beano McDonald, Laois, had an horrific leg break against Tyrone in 2004 it was Gerry McEntee, footballer and surgeon, a spectator in the crowd, who ran down to the pitch and made all the necessary calls to get him straight to hospital and properly looked after. He missed the rest of the game himself. No substitute for class.

Dublin got awarded a late penalty in the 1994 that seemed
very soft but they had scored it we would have been in trouble
because there wasnt long left but Neil Collins made a good save.
Mickey Linden was very unselfish in teeing up James McCartan
for a goal that.

Your right that Derry game was a classic. We were leading by a
point or two most of the match until we seemed to be sunk by
a goal from McCusker. Fortunately McCabe scored a great goal
into the top corner to win the match!!!

Mickey Linden took Gary Coleman for 6 or 7 pts from play and Coleman got unmerited abuse after as Linden did that to every back that year. Niall Cahalane, Paul Curran spring to mind.

Gerry McEntee operated on Ambrose Rodgers to remove his
spleen after he got injured v Wexford in 2008. He had played
against his father Ambrose Rodgers snr who came on as a sub
in the 1991 team. Ambrose Rodgers snr had a lot of injury trouble
in 1991. Ambrose Rodgers snr sadly passed away at the age of 39.
Think he was the first Down player on any of the All Ireland teams
to pass away.

Yeah Linden was brilliant in 1994. McGrath said on Laochra
Gael that while Linden was an important part of the 1991 win
he was the main reason for the 1994 triumph.

He died that young.. I remember him and was it Liam Austin, 35 year olds coming on.
