Do away with hipp hipp hooray

(Oldest Posts First)

Its patronising, out of date, the last thing any loosing team wants to hear, and certainly annoying to the defeated fans..
Its had its day, now please stop it.

Fully agree with you, but we have had threads started on here in the last year because the winning captain omitted the 3 cheers, so no matter what happens somebody will manage to take offence over it.

Totally agree. It's totally outdated. I think it's good to acknowledge defeated opponents but not in that silly anachronistic way.

U actually think it would be a good move for the gaa to ask the winning capt not to give the 3 cheers. Then its off the capt shoulders.

Did Cluxton do it last year (or in 2013/2011)?

Being hip hipped after losing an All-Ireland is like another kick into the nads minutes after receiving one already!

Captains should think of something 'hip' and 'cool' to say when comiserating with the opposition to cheer them up. Maybe a collective manhug, a selfy and then they can tweet it to the masses. God help us, when there aren't enough issues in the GAA, now it's not cool enough.

Don't think he did it last year either. Not all captains do but i do agree it needs to go. Makes me cringe.

Totally agree - I've given (very few) winning captain speeches but never do the three cheers. Always commiserate with losing team and ask for round of applause. That's more than enough.

It's a bit of a pointless gesture alright, but we're only fans and it isn't directed at us. Strange that the people you'd expect to hate it most- the players, still keep it up. Cork heard it as losers after the Munster and the All Ireland finals in 2013, but Pa Cronin still gave the three cheers for Limerick in 2014. Same with Kerry, Donegal, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Mayo etc. They've all lost various provincial and All Ireland finals in the last few years, but still produce the 3 cheers when they win them too.

Here here, it's absolutely pathetic, in fairness I thought Brendan Mahers speech yesterday was brutal, time to do away with the whole charade, should just present them with medals and then the cup, and let them off.

If the winning captain is to make a speech he should reference the losing side.
My question is why have a speech at all?

If you don't like the speech you can just leave the grounds/change the channel. I don't see why it's such a concern to some people.

Oh wow,a typo on my behalf.
Actually if we want to be grammatically correct its actually defeated. All hail those of us who do not make the odd typo. Apologies
