Tomsmith Cavan here

I just wonder when did the outgoing All ireland champions or anyone in fact score 2-20 and get well beaten?
It was a fantastic score for a team that so well beaten in every section of the field.

Just wondering how they managed to score 2-20 when they were beaten all over the pitch.
Just shows what a clever team they are and how efficient they are with possession.

Not many teams concede 2-29 and win to be fair.

Happens often in hurling. Antrim failed to win this year's Christy Ring Cup despite scoring 5-17 in the replayed final (32 pts).

Wexford lost a Leinster final in the 1970s despite scoring 2-24.

Amazing 2-20 and were outplayed for 90 percent of the game - on top of that Gleeson had 3-4 good saves

If you offered me Kilkenny scoring 2-20 before the match I would have snapped your hand off. I wouldn't have been counting on our backs being cleaned out to the extent that they were, though.

2-20 isn't that big a score in hurling anymore.

Anything less than 20 points (the ball going over the bar 20 times) is bad day for a good hurling team these days.

20 points in hurling is about the equivalent of 12 or 13 points in football.

26 points, or worse, and losing has been done five times in All Ireland hurling finals.

2016 Tipperary 2 29 Kilkenny 2 20
1990 Cork 5 15 Galway 2 21
1972 Kilkenny 3 24 Cork 5 11
1971 Tipperary 5 17 Kilkenny 5 14
1963 Kilkenny 4 17 Waterford 6 8

Never before by the reigning champions.

Kilkenny's 5-14 in 1971 was the highest score to lose an All Ireland final. Laois' 3-22 (in 2015 v Antrim) was the highest score to lose a championship match. Antrim scored 5-17 that day. Laois' score would have won over 87% of all hurling matches EVER (all things being equal).

Read during the week that Eddie Keher scored 2-11 of Kilkenny's total that day.

Callanan scored 0-13 yesterday. He could've had a handy goal too. He came so close to that record.

The amazing thing was that Tipp could quite easily have hit 5-35 or so.What an absolute roasting the Kilkenny backs got yesterday.
Tipp will take some stopping next year!

Very interesting. where did you get that statistic? Perhaps you calculated but where did you get the data? if you know that score would have won 87% of matches then you must have all of the results to hand...Thanks for sharing.

Think the more telling statistic is that Tipp scored 2-23 from play compared to 2-8 for Kilkenny .......think that stat really shows the difference in the fluidity of the two teams yesterday

Interestingly, the combined total of the two teams yesterday was 61 points, which is a record and is the exact same combined total as when they met in the 1971 final. It was an 80 minute final in 1971 though so yesterday's scoring rate is even more impressive.
