Club rivalries causing friction at County level

(Oldest Posts First)

Curious if there are any club rivalries that spill over into county? Are there any players that play together at county level that can't stand each other because of their clubs?

Yes , nearly every Derry player hates nearly every Derry player.

Not sure how we would know which players hate which players. It's not like they come out in public and say it.

In Antrim it is all very harmonious. Well, apart from us Glens folk who don't really like other Glens folk. And I suppose we don't really like the McCooeys and they don't really like us. There are probably some cases too that some of the folk mentioned don't particularly get on with ones within their own clubs either. But apart from that it's all harmonious.

There's plenty of it in every county if the truth be known. Your not going to have 30 plus lads together for a season without there been friction between a number of them and fellas who can't stand other fellas.

In many ways it's one of the unseen things that top managers can handle to the betterment of the team that sets them apart from other managers.

There are club rivals in every county. There are rivals for positions on every team. There are players who I suspect do one another in training. It is a dog eat dog environment in most counties, how it should be.
I am sure there are players in Wexford on the team who can't stand one another. I am sure there are players in Kilkenny who can't stand each other. But once it doesn't come between the team and the overall goal, there is no problem with this.

In certain counties it's completely used as an excuse .

There is massive rivalry in successful counties ie Tyrone .

Used in counties like Derry and Galway as a silly reason.

Is it true McMahon and Connolly don't speak to each other?

It seems to be very bad in Derry. The Bradleys would have had their own clique, but that might be more a Bradley problem than a Glenullin one!

Not as much club divides in Roscommon but a North verses South.

North Kerry hurling. If they didn't all hate each other so much we'd be a top dual county!!!

They wouldn't hanging round with each other outside of the Dublin setup too much in anyways ;)

Champo final a few years back was a spicy affair!

"club rivalry" tends to be a cowardly humble-brag by some counties. You're trying to say "our players are SO much more passionate about football and their clubs than any other county's players,so they can't function for the county".

It's like teams who claim "oh typical us, always have it in our grasp before throwing it away. We only defeat ourselves". As though they could easily beat any other team but its only mental frailty that loses it, not the fact they play worse than other teams. Scotland (at rugby, soccer, politics, everything) seem to love using that.

But I thought Kerry's recent improvements in hurling was down to players from Tipp and Clare etc who can't make their own County teams switching to the Kingdom.

Strange comment! Maybe upperhand is jealous of the fact that the better footballers are down south!!!
