Is faulty vision a prerequisite for being considered suitable for umpiring? avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1974 - 21/08/2016 17:59:48 1903956 Link 0 |
Completely agree. You had one umpire blantly ignore Lee pulling a Tipp player when it happened about 6 feet in front of him. At the other end the umpire signals the ref to give a Tipp player a yellow card for pushing a mayo player. The umpires are a complete farce. They are not even need in croke park as they have hawk eye instead. kevin03 (Tyrone) - Posts: 276 - 22/08/2016 12:30:03 1904391 Link 0 |
One or two of the dudes working with Owens at last year's hurling final wanted KK to win fairly badly, and gave anything up to FOUR dubious 65 calls as a result. Not a bad day's work. Perhaps they were Olympic boxing judges dressed in large white coats. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3395 - 22/08/2016 12:42:10 1904406 Link 0 |
They're neither use nor ornament at games without hawkeye either. They have bats eyes compared to hawkeye most of the time. Ultimately the ref decides on cards based on an umpires instructions. For the yellow card the umpires didn't look, to me, like men telling the ref that a man deserved yellow. The red card was a joke. The black card was harsh.

They're selected by the matchday referee, and so are often his buddies. I kid thee not!

Apparently there's a training course for umpires: one learns something new every day! But they are still selected by the match referee. http://www.gaa.ie/my-gaa/match-officials/become-a-match-official Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 22/08/2016 18:00:45 1904574 Link 0 |

Don't embarrass yourself on a public forum unless you at least know the GAA rules, umpires can't call fouls during play, has been in the rules of the association since the beginning, therefore Keegan couldn't be called by umpire, how was black card harsh? Blatant black card, player was foolish, ref was 100% correct, James Horan and tommy Carr also embarrassed themselves with their comments on it, standard of umpiring is actually excellent, certainly entitled to make one or two mistakes, incidents mentioned happened 40 metres away, they got one look, umpires generally do hundreds of matches for referees per year, how would it work with only Hawkeye? Takes hawkeye a good 30 seconds to respond, hawkeye can't advise on square balls, 45 or 65s, kawaifive0 (Westmeath) - Posts: 112 - 22/08/2016 18:27:34 1904586 Link 0 |
You normally find that the umpires will be referee's from the same county or a neighbouring county that the match day referee knows well. Yes they are more than likely friends of the referee.

Drop the insulting tone and then maybe we can have a debate. I said nothing about a black card. For your information here is an extract from the officIAL GAA website delineating the powers of the umpire.owers of Umpires The umpire has the power to bring to the attention of the referee, during a break in play, any instances of foul play or incursions onto the field of play which have not been noticed by the referee. It is the duty of the umpire to report any such instances and his obligation is to do so by providing the factual situation regarding the instance. The umpires DID have the power to call to the referee's attention any instances of foul play. It is at the referee's discretion to decide on the sanction based on the umpires report. Get your facts right. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1974 - 22/08/2016 19:30:48 1904610 Link 1 |
