Bryan Sheehan to make history?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With Bryan Sheehan going in between the sticks.will he be the first player to win all ireland playing outfield and in goal? I think he great in nets.I worry wouldnt worry about his shop stopping as Dublin forwards convertion rate is poor on goals. It will be a great for Bryan winning his 6th all ireland .

Joe MCnally won a minor medal in 1982 in goals for Dublin V Kerry and won a senior medal 12 months later at number 15 for Dublin V Galway. Per wikipedia He is the only player ever to win a minor medal and senior medal in two consecutive years. Limerick keeper nickie quaid played outfield in 2010 championship and kilkenny eoin murphy played in forward for their inter side

Their conversion rate could improve dramatically with Sheehan in the goals.

You know there's a guy who isn't a keeper day in and day out their and it would give you a bit more confidence.

Forward / midfielder / goalie

If you could bring on place kickers it would save him lot of bother

Think Adrian Ronan played in goals and outfield for Kilkenny but don't think he did it in an All-Ireland winning season. Open to correction.

I always thought he was a quality corner forward and wonder was the sub goalie thing a bit of a gimmick.

The more i think about it the more this would make sense, he's one of the best free takers if not the best in the country.
He doesn't have the legs anymore to go for the full 70mins plus especially against a quick team like dublin.
Keepers now play as a extra defender ( sweeper keeper ) which he could do with ease.
This could be a masterstroke on kerrys part i think its worth the risk.

yep and worryingly, the Dubs were red hot favourites to win that day...my dad, a Kerryman, kept all the papers from that match...

Jays that's gas we do the very same thing (keeping the news papers) it amazing the more things change the more they stay the same.
Personally I think putting Sheehan in goals is a great idea. In 2014 our minor team put rathmore fullforward Shane Ryan in goals and we won the allireland , last year our Kerry minors put crokes midfielder billy Courtney in goals and we won the allireland, so it's not that big a deal IMO plus Sheehan played that posision as a minor him self.

I had to do something similar myself recently (obviously at a much lower level of competition) and found it took a few sessions to get used to playing back in goal again, hitting men from kickouts, anticipating goal chances, being able to pick the ball off the ground in the small square etc. It would be interesting to see if Sheehan could just slot back into the position in such a crunch match.

Having said that, goalkeeper has been an unsettled position for Kerry since Diarmuid Murphy hung up his gloves, so perhaps it's not such a crazy idea after all.

We've been knocking a few points over the bar this year so that will do me....a couple of goals in the onion sack will be a nice bonus :)

Just the one thing that sticks out, is Brian Sheehan, beautiful kicker of the ball and lets play with along with the pretence he will go in goal.
The bonus is that we will have one of the best kickers on the field to kick long range , short range points off the ground.
The problem though is 1) can his legs take the fatigue of kicking out all day and then kicking 45s
2)when he comes up the field to kick a free, he will have to run back into goal...as we all know Brian has no speed and gets fairly tired quick when he has to run hard!

Ned Roche remarked after that match, which is still remembered in Kerry when many other finals are half forgotten, that he watched as Heffo headed out and he met him on his way back in again. Not too many poets knocking about Knocknagoshel, obviously. That said, the job was done!

A nice plan from Kerry. Hopefully they also have a plan this year to avoid every corner forward they have getting beasted by Philly McMahon for 70 minutes.
