Austin Gleeson Potentially the Greatest

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I've seen great teams great players great forwards great backs but I've never seen anything like Austin Gleeson for me we are potentially looking at the greatest hurler of all time. Put him anywhere on the field he will Run amok , posters said "let's see how he does against Cats" will he destroyed them in both games so much so Cody had to tell the keeper to stop pucking the ball in Glesson's direction, for me at only 21 I can't think of a better hurler and I think we are looking at the greatest hurler that ever played the game.

It's always very easy to get carried away about the potential of an emerging young talent- in any sport. But in Gleeson's case, I have to agree with you. I said a few weeks ago he was the best talent 'I've seen since Joe Canning broke through and if anything, what he's done in the last few games has made me question if he's the best talent I've ever seen on a hurling pitch.

Probably the hurler of the year to date and not sure if anyone from Tipp or KK will overtake him in the final.

If he "destroyed Kilkenny" in both games, how come Waterford won neither and Kilkenny are in AI final?

"I can't think of a better hurler and I think we are looking at the greatest hurler that ever played the game." Better then Shefflin?

I remember people saying exactly the same things about Joe Canning about 8 years ago.

Gleeson is special and an exceptional talent, but he has weaknesses, and plenty of room for improvement. Give the lad a chance. Lets wait another 5 years before making ridiculous statements like "we are looking at the greatest hurler that ever played the game"

Potentially being the operative word. Needs to learn to be more of a team player first.

Lets just enjoy watching him for a while before he gets over-hyped.

I agree but bit early to say that...
Love to see him in the All Ireland final someday where he can truly etch himself into history

Couldn't help thinking, watching him leaping and catching them balls yesterday, shame Tommy Walsh wasn't still playing. What an aerial dual that would have been.

Agree here this is just crazy talk give the chap time, he plays two great senior game and outstanding 21 game and now the greatest of all times, I can safely say he is not even the greatest Waterford player of all times yet. Ken Mc, Tony Browne, Paul Flynn all ahead of him at the moment. I do hope he finds that one position and leave him there as this swapping around could be bad for his game.

Posters I said "potentially" plus I'm talking about the greatest hurler ever that can play in any position. Like do I think he's a better forward than Henry ? No I don't but I don't think Henry could play corner back Gleeson can play anywhere and be just as good. Honestly I can't think of anyone this talented at such a young age. He is a freak of nature someone tell me a more talented hurler at this age that can play any position? Tony Kelly outrageous hurler but he'd never be able to play centre back or full back.

Talent wise he is country mile ahead of McGrath Browne and Flynn , please Flynn had unbelievable talent but he'd be lost at centre back. What part of "potentially" are posters failing to understand? cockney they didn't win cause sadly they've only one Austin Gleeson but give it time they'll get there eventually I'm convinced of that.

Tommy Walsh won 9 All-Stars in four different positions.

Tommy Walsh was the greatest all rounder I ever saw. He did it consistently year after year. And in different positions. Gleeson had a good year this year, he's on the right track. We will see in 5 years time how he's performing

Yeah Tommy Walsh was unbelievable, but I think Gleeson is more talented than Tommy Walsh. I don't remember Tommy dominating games for Kilkenny at 21 like Gleeson does. At 21 was the manager of the opposition telling the keeper to keep the ball away from Tommy ? I don't think so , Tommy was great up front but not like Gleeson, this kid is frightening I've never seen anyone this good at this age. He's only going to get better and he will win Waterford an all Ireland I've no doubt about that.
