Dean Rock

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think I read an article in Saturday mornings paper that Dean Rock had scored 17 points from free's in a row without a wide - don't believe he missed any on Saturday which takes that to 21/22

Appreciate that he has some help from fact that cluxton takes the longer ones but that aside its some statistic - people can harp on to the halcyon days of Sheehy/Giles/B Rock/ Tompkins but sure it's a remarkable record under any comparison

He took one shortly after Mchughs goal into a breeze into the Davin from a tight angle on right last week that was key in calming any nerves Dublin may have had

Yes he's up there with the best around now. So much so that he will retain his place.

He is very good at them and its such an important part of the game. especially now with mass defenses.
I feel Dublin probably have better forwards in open play but his free taking is exceptional and most likely a massive reason why Dublin will win another All Ireland.

Excellent free taker all right a bit like O'Connor from Mayo though, They both offer very little from play but are worth there place on teams for dead balls alone.

funny im just not convinced about him as a good player, no doubt a fantastic free taker, as good as there is now, but does he impact from play?

I get the points about not offering much from play, and maybe there is a bit of truth there - but jesus, would Tyrone not have been doing with someone that deadly from dead ball on Saturday? There is a place for reliability in the modern game I think!

One the few really reliable free takers around, definitely worth his place

If you think Cillian O'Connor offers Mayo very little from play, you're way off the mark!

A free taker like Rock for Dublin is worth his weight in GOLD.

To his credit

He's got better, and he's obviously put in a lot of effort!

We're blessed to have a number of free takes that you could trust to swing over an important free

One of the many missing pieces we suffered with in the 00's... missed frees cost us very dearly back then, too many to mention but, 2002, 2005, 2006 - could have result in AI finals if we had a reliable and natural free kick taker

Any lad who will get you seven or eight points from frees is worth his place. Dublin have five other forwards who can take up the slack.

He was inconsistent for a long spell but seems to have hit a purple patch recently. I would agree that he probably doesn't do a huge deal from play but then again Dublin don't play high ball stuff. Our FFs who either drop and run from deep (Kev Mc, Mannion) or who are pacey to the corners for diagonal ball (Bernard, Paddy) do the work from play. Dean doesn't drop team to run with the ball and Jimmy Keaveney would beat him in a sprint, so he doesn't do corners either. As I see it, he's there for frees, to cover opposition short kick-outs and to link half-forward runs with hand passes. He's definitely no Barney but a vital cog in the Dublin forward department no doubt.

Another in a long Line of great Meath men free takers, following on from the likes of Stafford Giles etc, it must be something in the Meath air.

Ha nice one but the 'greater Dublin area' extends from Finglas north to Ashbourne. So we'll claim anything in between. I used to drink with Barney and Dave Synott in the Fox Inn many years ago. There were more Dub ex-pats there than Meath men.

Dean Rock is from Ballymadun and it is most definitely in Dublin.

Lovely pints to be had in the Fox Inn there.
