Longest serving inter co players

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

David Clarke Mayo's goalie was sub keeper when we last played Westmeath in the championship. Is there many other inter county players who have been involved for 15 years or more.

Dick Clerkin(Monaghan) and Mark Brehony(Sligo) are longest serving inter county players. Both playing since 2000. I don't think Clarke made championship debut until 2005

John Galvin played 15 years for Limerick footballers (1999-2014). What a shame he never won a Munster championship.

Some committment from those lads to still be going. A few of the Dongeal lads have been around a while. I think Toye is around the longest though. He made his champioship debut in 2002

Stephen Cluxton made his Championship debut for Dublin in 2001. The longest serving Dub by a long shot.

When The Birmingham Six were released in 1989 after wrongfully serving 15 years in prison, their first question was to ask whether Martin Carney was still playing for Mayo.

That's right. Christy Toye, Colm Mcfadden and Rory Kavanagh have all been part of the Donegal squad since 2001. I think Toye and McFadden played in the league relegation play off in 2001 and all three then made their championship debut in 2002.

I honestly feel that if used correctly, Toye could play another 2 years for us as well. Mcfadden and Kavanagh will probably it quits after this year.

And he won his first provincial playing for Donegal (was in in the middle of the field) when Donegal won their first provincial title.

Dick Clerkin made his debut in October 1999.

Two of the greatest hurlers of all time:

Christy Ring of Cork played his first Senior inter Championship game in 1939, and last in 1962 - 23 years.

Eddie Keher of Kilkenny played from 1959 to 1977 - 18 years.

There's probably more who played just as long, if not longer. But how many played constantly at the highest level like these two?

Tony Browne 1991 - 2014 inclusive. Another man who should have pocketted a senior medal. He was "Mr Waterford"

Noel O'Dwyer played for Tipp from 1968 - 1984. So he played in 13 of the 15 season spell where Tipp couldn't manage to win a Munster title never mind anything beyond.

He was a great servant to Tipperary GAA. He still managed to win an all-Ireland in 1971 so all wasn't lost.

Was there not a guy who came on in a final Kerry v Mayo who was 39/40 years of age - a mayo player (80's I think). Could any of the Mayo contributors confirm
