Cavan vs Armagh

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Can Armagh cause an upset here? I see a Cavan player talking about winning Ulster - which can be dangerous at this stage of the season. Do we expect a cake-walk for Cavan a la Tyrone last week??

A cake-walk? No, can't see it.

I think we're stronger all-round than Armagh, but it won't be anything like the league meeting where we ran out 17point winners. There'll be 3-4 points in it either way. It will tell a lot about this Cavan team and how they've progressed if they can avoid getting drawn into anything synical.

i don't think there are any genuine cavan people who think that this will be a cake-walk, we have been through too much to start thinking like that. The favourite's tag does not sit easily with us. Armagh have improved alot since we played them in the league and I'm sure Mcgeeney wont play the same as he did in the league. He will have measures in place to nullify our dangermen, whether these measures are legal or not. It is up to Cavan to not get imbroilled in a war of attrition. terry Hyland and his mgmt team need to be smarter than hithertofore regarding in-game changes. Too often situations have been left for too long without changes being made and I'm not simply talking about substitutions.
against Tyrone in the league final, seanie Johnstone and David Givney were not getting a sniff of it because of the way Tyrone set up yet nothing was done, He could have made a few tactical switches , maybe bring givney out to centrefield for a while, put argue inside or even put Argue inside along with Givney just give the Tyrone boys something new to think about, disrupt their pattern. If something similar happens v Armagh I hope Hyland has a plan B.

I think Cavan have progressed from the mainly defensive set-up of last year and they look to have enough firepower to take Armagh. After such a successful league run it would be a big set back to lose to Armagh and I would take them to win by 4 points.

Not a great selection of games this weekend. This is by far the most interesting. No love lost here after that flare up during the post game parade couple years back.Cavan destroyed Armagh in the league.I expect Armagh to improve vastly on that non-performance but i still think Cavan have more quality and i'm predicting a 5-7 point win for the Cavan men.

I fancy Armagh for this in a close enough game, Don't really rate this Cavan side having seen them a fair few times in last few years. Armagh will be a different side than when these teams met in the league

I fancy Armagh here. I think that Cavan are a very good side, but were really aiming at the league final and didnt succeed. Their management would never admit this, but it would make sense that this is the rung of the ladder that they wanted to build from. Armagh were very unlucky to go down into division 3 and it could equally have been a few other teams. They will be totally up for this game and I am sure that they will give Cavan a horrible time of it. I also think that either side will dread playing tyrone in the next game.

This is an interesting game and hard to call. I think Armagh will be much better than they showed in last year's championship and were unlucky to get relegated this year. Cavan are really improving and I am expecting big things form them in the years ahead. It will be a tight game but home advantage should see Cavan win by a few points.

No cake walk, but Cavan should get through in a physical encounter

I reckon Armagh will make a better fist of things than they did in the league but would expect Cavan to come out on top by 3 or 4 points.

This will probably be a tough, physical game. If either team has a player red-carded, the whole course of the game could be changed. I think Cavan should just about do it.

Not sure how you can say that. . .

Both players and management were saying it was bonus territory and even in the days before the game called it a warm-up for this Armagh game.

Watching the game, it was clear to see that Cavan weren't really going for Tyrone - looking to add the 2nd wave of players to the attack to punch holes in the blanket defence. If you contrast that to the 5 must-win league games prior to that, you'll see how we approached the league final differently.

The only way Armagh will win this game is being c(s)ynical so expect a few handbags on parade and in first 15 mins as they did a few years ago against Cavan, Tyrone and another team who I cant recall off the top of my head. In terms of winning Ulster, like Tyrone they still have more to prove but are going in right direction esp since they stopped playing that style of football.

Fancy Armagh to shade it.Cavan played really well in the League final but Tyrone were still comfortable winners without hitting top gear.League status counts for little here.

Had our league results been reversed I wouldn't be holding any fear of Armagh going into this game and would be expecting a massive backlash from our players. I see no reason why Armagh will not be in the same state of mind so we will have a massive battle on our hands. Game is 50:50 in my mind but if we knuckle down and relish the battle, don't panic, I think we can scrape by. Wouldn't pay too much heed to favourite's tag, someone has to carry it. If it weighs us down that much then maybe we're not that good to begin with. Hoping for a proper Ulster Championship encounter on Sunday and obviously a Cavan win :). Good luck to all.

this is a very interesting and factually correct article regarding cavan's use of their most talented players, something which I alluded to earlier. let's hope lessons have been learnt.
