Online abuse

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I just want to say on the recent online abuse to players was shocking , in my experience in receiving it couple of years ago sent me over the edge and really took me a long time to over come it and I thought I would never ref football again . It affected my mental health. And people that troll this abuse must understand that they do not understand that what is going on in a persons personal life and need to think before they tweet or put on in social media .

Am back Reffing again and the amount of people that supported me through my bad times with depression and the after math of the trolls and still get well wishers .

So please people be mindfull what you put on social media think about if your family or friends where been attacked in this way and think of the persons mental state .

Regards

Dellboy

Fair play to you - it is a big thing to admit you were affected that badly but good to hear you are back reffing again.

I think when people join twitter for example they can get carried away & say all sorts but a bit of maturity and counting to ten never hurt. One tweet can do so mych damage, best to just pick up a phone and talk to someone than throw online abuse.

Fairplay Dell. It's an Irish thing to refuse to admit your problem but you have tackled it head on. You are a credit to yourself. I'm glad to hear you are on the mend now.

Also good to see you back on this. You were one of the posters I always enjoyed.

These days it seems so easy to post abuse online without seeing the hurt it causes.I hope it did not come from real Westmeath supporters as I for one detest this. As it was years ago and should remain the same - what goes on on a pitch stays on he pitch. The ref did his job and that's the end of it.

Think this is probably the first time I have agreed with Dellboy but well done and all the best in your own recovery.

We should also separate the difference between abuse. All abuse is bad and will affect individuals differently.

Trolling is bad enough but these were actual threats to kill directed at Paddy O'Rourke and indeed a former Meath footballer also.

Good luck anyway Dell

Well done Dell,

True courage.

However, the issue with recent online abuse isn't as clear cut as we'd like to think. I certainly do not condone threats to carry out acts of violence on anyway. The players who retweeted messages from his account is no stranger to winding people up and making snide remarks on twitter. So he really has to take most of them on the chin.

Good man Dell, nice to see you back and sorry to hear about the abuse you suffered, it's disgraceful carry on perpetrated by complete cowards. Happy to hear that this isn't beating you though.

It may not be right but it certainly goes with the territory. Refs cant see everything that goes on in a match and should get much more help from their officials. Refs and players have been getting abuse since long before the arrival of cybebulluing. I'm not a ref, I get enough abuse at home! But I do admire their bravery/foolishness in taking on the job. I guess the best advice before taking up or returning to reffing is to be aware that you're definitely going to be abused and if you can't stand the heat...........

The whole attitudes around referees needs to change but that will take a very long time
Your last sentence is totally wrong and doesn't actually help things. Yes referees will get comments made about them but that doesn't mean they should have to. If referees are getting abused they need the best systems around them so that the worst stuff, anything personal etc is stopped
