It was a tyrone man who was instrumental in those 4 titles for cavan. Back with tyrone and they are showing he is a good coach- peter donnelly.

no, don't claim to be. there is plenty of potential there but it will take something special to make us a top county over the next 4-6 years.

Cavan have produced a lot of solid players from the u21 teams, but not many, if any, top class inside forwards.

Also a step up from U21 to Senior. Not all good U21's make good Senior players.

Would you want Cavan to win that way?

A great win for Tyrone and under age success is important but the development of the players is even more so. As a outsider it looks like Cavan are going the right way with under age titles and progress in the national league with division two consolidation. I expect them to shake Monaghan in the championship. Roscommon are another who seem to be doing it the right way with under age success and progress in the national league.

I would agree that Peter Donnelly would have had a big impact on Tyrone and he certainly left his mark on the Cavan lads. We have got some good players out of our underage system but maybe lack the cutting edge to transform it into All Ireland's. After all, our seniors have 39 ulster titles and only 5 all ireland's!

Yeah, fair play to Tyrone, but they had an easier run than Cavan did. (No disrespect to Tipperary but they have no pedigree at this level in Gaelic Football. Perhaps they can start something, Munster football could do with it). Cavan on the other hand lost out to Galway (u21 winners twice in the last 5 years) Roscommon (contested 2 AI finals in last 4 years) Cork (4 in a row winners in Munster) and the Dubs (no explanation needed).

Oh, and Cavan beat Tyrone in the Ulster finals in 2011 and 2012 as well as beating them in 2014 along the way to the final. So I wouldn't go blowing any trumpets just yet, your senior team is no better than ours right now. And nobody on this site will live to see the day when Cavan's 39 Ulster titles are beaten.

Four Ulster 21 titles in a row speaks for itself. The Cavan giant will rise again, its a question of when, lest we forget Cavan are still Ulsters premier football county in terms of titles and that alone will take some beating.

Lads, we have 37 Ulster titles, not 39

The aim for this current group of players should be an Ulster title within 3 years. I think we will have a new manager next year so I'd expect us to either improve sufficiently to challenge or to slip back and waste a generation of talented footballers. For the fans, it's a case of wait and see!

Tipperary beat Dublin, something Cavan couldn't do last year. They were Munstr U21 champions in 2010 and have contested the Munster u21 finals in 2013 and 2014, Minor all Ireland champions 2011, not like they came out of nowhere.

Not sure where you're getting your information from. The official GAA website will say 39, which included 1922. But, Monaghan beat Cavan in the 1922 championship and went on to play Dublin in the semi-final. The history books are skewed as there were many games pushed back to 1923 due to the situation in the country at the time.
Also, Armagh lay claim to the 1903 Ulster title - as do Cavan. My understanding on this one is that Armagh did win the Ulster title, beating Antrim in the final, but played Cavan to see who would advance to the All Ireland series. I think this was due to an Established Cavan GAA scene not seeing eye-to-eye with a newly formed Ulster Council. Cavan duly won this match but were not awarded the title of Ulster Champions.

Very interesting. Did not know that. I'll choose to ignore it nonetheless, 40 is a nice round figure you see, rolls easily of the tongue, which will be vital this Summer.

Cavans problem four under 21s in a row and not a decent forward. Players fit to play a system but not to play football.Imo.

Am not sure the point of the thread. Is it about U21 success being a serious marker to senior success or bemoaning whether a county is a top team in modern day football. Roscommon have won 4 of the last 6 U21 titles in Connacht with Galway winning the other two. Galway went onto win two all-Irelands while the Rossies unfortunately won none. In fairness to the Rossies though they are getting it together at senior. Galway also getting it together under a new manager but might take a bit more time. Cavan's development will watched with interest this year given some of the u21s have decent senior experience behind them and peak senior age appears a lot younger than other eras.

yes believe me, This has been noted in Cavan. We were hammerd by Galway in the 2011 final so no excuses there (they were simply much better than us).
but we were within a point I think in the other semi-finals so it shows that we probably didn't know how to win.(although some will say we were unlucky. also against Donegal this year we were 2 points up and 2 minutes of injury time gone when Ryan McHugh scored a goal so if we had got through that, who knows..but yes you are right. 4 titles and no all-ireland, then Tyrone come along and win at the first attempt (in recent years.. I mean).

i really get annoyed about people saying it was a soft all ireland when teams other that big ones win it
there is no such thing just because kerry and dublin etc arnt in it doesnt devalue it
after all if the bigger countys were good enough they be there thenselves
